Alice Coulam is a jazz and Big Band singer. She is well-known around the Northern jazz scene having worked in Leeds, Sheffield and Manchester for a number of years. She works with many talented and well-established musicians regularly appearing with the Andy Cholerton trio, the Steve Moore trio, the Manchester Jazz Collective and the Southside Jazz Band. In addition to this she has worked with the Brian Dee trio, Alan Barnes, the Rodger Heeley Trio, the Len Phillips Big Band and recorded backing vocals for Richard Hawley’s album Low Edges. Alice started Big Band singing just over a year ago and now sings for several UK big bands including the Nick Ross Orchestra (alongside Matthew Ford and Jez Unwin), the Swing Shift Big Band and occasionally with the John Miller Orchestra. She performs “Blue Moon” on the newly released Nick Ross Orchestra album, “My FavouriteThings”.
Despite her busy schedule, Alice finds time to work on her own Quintet (which features the talented trombonist Lee Hallam), in which they arrange standards, original ideas and sometimes feature Alice on the piano. Last year the Quintet recorded their first album, the EP “Time After Time”, which can be bought via this website.
Alongside performing around the jazz scene, Alice is also experienced in providing musical entertainment for occasions such as weddings, dinners, balls and corporate events having worked for a number of years with several successful function bands. She can provide anything from a duo up to a sextet depending on whether you require light dinner music or lively swing dance music. You can contact Alice directly or visit the “City Lights Jazz Group” website for further information.
Alice’s main influences include Anita O’Day, Peggy Lee, Nat King Cole and Nina Simone
